Flappy Bird is a simple yet notoriously challenging mobile game that took the world by storm in early 2014. Developed by Vietnamese game developer Dong Nguyen, the game features a tiny bird that players must guide through a series of narrow gaps between green pipes by tapping the screen to keep it airborne. The mechanics are deceptively simple, yet the precise timing required to keep the bird from crashing makes it incredibly difficult—and frustrating. Despite its basic pixelated graphics and straightforward gameplay, Flappy Bird became an overnight sensation, largely due to its addictive nature and the competitive urge to beat high scores.
However, the game’s rapid rise to fame also led to its unexpected downfall. The overwhelming popularity of Flappy Bird resulted in intense media attention and a flood of player complaints about its difficulty, which even sparked accusations of game design being intentionally frustrating. In February 2014, Nguyen shocked the gaming community by removing the game from app stores, citing concerns about its addictive nature and the stress it brought him. Although Flappy Bird is no longer officially available, its legacy lives on through numerous clones, remakes, and its lasting influence on the hypercasual gaming genre.
